Best Time to Visit Nepal for Trekking and Tours

A practical season-by-season guide for treks, culture tours, wildlife and family travel.

Nepal is not a one-season destination. The best time depends on whether you are trekking high, touring cities, visiting wildlife areas, or combining everything in one private journey.

Autumn: the clearest classic season

Late September to November is the most popular period for trekking because the monsoon has usually cleared the air and the bigger mountain views are at their most reliable. October is the busiest month, so travelers who want the same general conditions with fewer people often prefer early November.

For cultural touring, autumn also works very well. Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini are active, roads are usually easier than in monsoon, and the weather feels comfortable for sightseeing.

Spring: warm, lively and beautiful in the hills

March to May is the second major travel window. Rhododendron forests bloom in many trekking regions, days are warmer, and the trails feel alive without the post-monsoon sharpness of autumn.

For Everest Base Camp, spring also overlaps with climbing season, which can make the upper Khumbu interesting but busier. For Annapurna, Langtang and foothill routes, spring is one of the most balanced choices.

Winter: quieter, colder and often underrated

December to February can be excellent for cultural tours, low-altitude treks and travelers who prefer quiet trails. Mountain views can be very clear, but high-altitude trekking becomes colder and needs better preparation.

We usually recommend winter for Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini, short foothill treks, and experienced trekkers who are comfortable with cold nights.

Monsoon: choose the route carefully

June to August is not ideal for classic trekking routes because rain, clouds and road disruption can affect the experience. However, it can work for travelers with fixed summer holidays if the route is chosen honestly.

Upper Mustang and other rain-shadow areas are better suited to monsoon than Everest or Annapurna Base Camp. City and nature tours are possible, but expectations should be realistic.

Our practical advice

For first-time visitors, October–November and March–April are the safest choices. For better value and fewer crowds, consider late November, early December or early March. If your dates are fixed, adjust the route rather than forcing the wrong trek into the wrong season.
