Annapurna Base Camp vs Everest Base Camp: Which Trek Should You Choose?
A clear comparison for travelers choosing between Nepal’s two most famous base camp treks.
Both treks are excellent, but they suit different travelers. The better choice depends less on fame and more on time, altitude comfort, scenery preference and logistics.
Choose Everest for the iconic high-altitude journey
Everest Base Camp is the more famous route. It has Sherpa culture, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, the Khumbu valley, Base Camp and Kala Patthar.
It is also higher, colder and more dependent on domestic flight logistics. The trek usually needs more days and better altitude pacing.
Choose Annapurna for variety and a shorter commitment
Annapurna Base Camp offers forests, villages, stone steps, river valleys and the dramatic mountain amphitheatre of the sanctuary. The scenery changes quickly, which many first-time trekkers enjoy.
It is usually easier to fit into a shorter Nepal holiday and has more flexible road access, although the walking can still be demanding.
Difficulty and altitude
Everest is generally harder because of sustained altitude. Annapurna has long climbs and descents, but the maximum altitude is lower.
For travelers worried about altitude, Annapurna Base Camp or a lower Annapurna foothill trek can be a more comfortable first choice.
Cost and logistics
Everest usually costs more because of Lukla flights and a longer itinerary. Annapurna can be better value, especially for private trips, because access from Pokhara is simpler.
Both can be upgraded or simplified depending on hotel level, porter ratio, guide language and pacing.
Our honest recommendation
Choose Everest if the dream is specifically Everest and you have enough days. Choose Annapurna if you want a beautiful, varied trek with less altitude pressure and a more flexible budget.
For first-time trekkers with limited time, Annapurna is often the more practical choice. For once-in-a-lifetime mountain symbolism, Everest still has a pull that is hard to replace.
